Holi Hai in Busan – Festival of Colors

Because sometime in the last few years, it became the “THING” to throw paint/get paint thrown at you.

Unlike the super trendy Color-Run-or-Dye-or-whatever 5ks (not that I have anything against them or that I wouldn’t participate in them if it was convenient for me to do so – because I totally would), the Holi Festival has deep roots. It’s a centuries-old Hindu tradition that celebrates the end of winter and beginning of spring. I won’t pretend too much that I celebrated for the actual ritual and tradition of it all (which is actually super interesting if you research it a bit) and not just for the binge-drinking and paint-throwing, so I’ll quickly move on to photos. But seriously, why is throwing paint so fun?

Delicious samosas, colorful hats and a bag of “dry paint” was given to each participant (10,000 won to participate, bee tee dub). Alcohol wasn’t sold but was basically encouraged, music was blasted, and the weather was perfect. The DJ started a countdown to commence the beginning of paint-throwing and the air was soon a cloud of pink, blue, green, yellow and orange as everybody frolicked around and tossed colors into strangers’ faces. We mixed colors to make purple and turquoise (which we were very proud of), got paint thrown in our mouths and eyes (not the tastiest) and ended the day with Mexican food at Fuzzy Navel. An overall successful day :).

Who: Paint-throwing Enthusiasts. And Hindus.

What: Holi Hai – Festival of Colors

Where: Haeundae Beach – Busan, South Korea (and all over the world)

When: March 16th, 2014

  1. Holiday is the best even in the states I’m so glad you had fun!!!

  2. I’ve always wanted to go to India when they’re celebrating Holi. I had no idea they’d celebrate it in Busan!

  3. Yes, it was so much fun! Was trying to see if I was in the background of any of your pics. 😉 I went last year too and I was afraid it wouldn’t be as good this year, but if anything it was better… definitely one of my favorite festivals. Seriously though, WHY is throwing paint so fun?!?!
